Snow Sculptor Comes to Dominican
By Mary Alice Carroll
On March 4th and 5th, The National Art Honors Society sponsored snow sculptor, Don Berg, who demonstrated and helped students create snow pieces during lunch and resource. This NAHS event was big risk because it was unsure at how many students would be interested, but fortunately it was a huge hit. Many students from all four grade levels came out both days to learn how to sculpt.
Don Berg began snow sculpting in 1983, after seeing other artists use natural materials to create. When he saw these artists, “I began to wonder about what other mediums I could use to create art.” Berg realized that snow sculpting was his passion, “and snow is free,” he explained.
NAHS did a great job organizing this event, you could tell by the student’s faces while working on their sculptures. Berg explained that snow sculpting is more than just creating, and really hit on some important points during his demonstration. Sophomore, Bucky Namin, said that Berg taught him that snow sculpting is about, “safety, art within the snow, patience, and it takes a lot of team work.” The students really came together and showed great teamwork while sculpting.
The process of snow sculpting can be hard work. It takes many jumps to get the snow all packed in a large garbage can, and then it is carefully dump into form. Students and staff came together to make about 10 sculptors. Even the Dean of Students, Brian Geittmann teamed up with the students to make a “G” sculpture.
Moderator of NAHS and art teacher, Lindsey Price was, “so pleased and proud of the students, they created great pieces.” Sadly, the sculptures had a fate of melting, but the memories and good times will stay with all the students who participated. Dominican High School definitely plans to invite Don Berg back next year.
