This book is not exclusively for basketball players or athletes, it has good advice for anyone who needs a little motivation. Each chapter focuses on a singular value or attribute; there are 41 different values, some of which include courage, friendship, and giving back. This book can be read in one sitting or in sections over a couple of weeks.
There is a quote at the beginning of the work that says, “this book is not merely about USING or BORROWING words; it is about OWNING them.” The power of words is an important aspect of Beyond Basketball. To know the definition of commitment or trust is one thing, but to actually own the words and put them into practice in one’s life is another thing altogether. This is reinforced through the life stories of Coach Krezyzewski, showing that these values can be practiced in everyday life.
Although some of Beyond Basketball is somewhat cliche, it is redeemed by its highly personal quality. Coach Krezyzewski writes about everything from winning national championships, to family issues and hardships. This book has the ability to touch anyone with its wide variety of stories.
Any young athlete from middle school onward would find some element of this book that inspires or touches them in some way. Any coach, athlete, spectator, or average person will enjoy aspects of Beyond Basketball. The work is a good read for anyone who needs a little inspiration or is interested about the insights of a NCAA Men’s National Championship coach.
