Students Connects with Community

By LeAnn Vance

Multiple fundraisers take place year round at Dominican, but none of them compare to what has been going on in the past couple of days. This year, the Advancement Office, led by Mrs. Giese, decided to try a Phone-a-thon.

Students were asked to volunteer their time beginning Sunday, January 31st to make calls to alumni, past parents, as well as previous donors concerning this year’s annual fund. The event began Sunday and will end on Thursday, February 4th.

The Phone-a-thon came about when the Development Team realized that sending letters to previous donors was not as efficient and that many of the smaller donors were not recognized. Mrs. Giese feels that a Phone-a-thon is also “the best way to practice connecting with alumni.”

The total amount that the Advancement office expects to raise in pledges is $10,000 and as of Monday night, $4,300 was pledged. “It’s gone incredibly well and the students have been so excited,” says Mrs. Giese, “they have helped us as a development team by giving us energy and reminding us why we’re here—to give student’s an education.”

A number of students volunteered to make calls, and most of them returned the following night to help as well. “It was so much fun,” says junior Becca Lade, “the people that I talked to were kind and respectful, which made me less nervous. I really enjoyed talking to them.”

Best of luck with the remainder of the event, and keep up the good work Dominican!
