By Ashley Warnke
On Tuesday night the Dominican boys’ varsity basketball team took on Saint John’s Northwestern Military Academy. With a close score for most of the game, the Knights were able to pull ahead in the last quarter and win the game with a score of 53-43.
In the fourth quarter with three minutes left in the game the score was tied at 40-40. At this point the team knew that they needed to push to finish the game. The entire gym was closely watching the game, supporting the team and hoping for a big run. That is exactly what happened for the Knights.
Mikael Luter nailed a three pointer, giving his team the boost they needed. From this point on the team intensely played defense and offense. Unfortunately, senior starter Tommy Popalisky received his fifth foul and fouled out of the game. The audience was visibly upset with the call. Fred Gladney went in to replace Popalisky for the rest of the game.
Duane Wilson, a freshman, led his team at the end of the game. He made several shots, including a lay-up at the buzzer which ended the game at 53-43. Fans were thrilled with the outcome of the game. Sarah Moede commented that “I can’t believe they were able to end so strong, they really do have a shot at state!”
Wilson was the leading scorer of the game with a total of 20 points. Iman Johnson also assisted the team with an additional 12 points. The Knights continue their strong run as they are now 5-0 in conference.
Overall Dominican is ranked 23rd in state and has a record of 12-3. The boy’s next game is scheduled for January 29th against St. Catherine’s in Racine.
