The Knights lose to Lake Country Lutheran

Whitefish Bay High School was packed with Dominican students and families Friday for the Homecoming game, in which the DHS Knights, though outscoring Lake Country Lutheran in the second half, fell in defeat 13-28.

Before even the players made it to the field, a fully DHS-affiliated crowd socialized, ate, and warmed up in preparation for the game. The Irish Band also performed for the early comers. The high point of the evening was the vast amount of chili provided by the Parents Association, which organized and came up with the events of the evening. Mrs. Julie Landes, a co-chair of the Association, knew the idea was a brilliant one from the start, and later stated, “This summer when we re-established the Parents Association, some parents who were concerned about the lack of activities–and subsequent lack of enthusiasm–for last year’s Homecoming came to us and asked if we could do anything to generate more excitement to get students to the game…it just grew as more ideas came forward.” Students were all eligible for a free bowl while parents were asked to donate a small fee. Cake was also provided, as were an abundance of cow bells and pom-poms for those lucky enough to arrive at the game early.

After students and their families ate chili until they were satisfied, the fall sports teams congregated on the field and were announced in appreciation for their commitments to their teams as well as their hard work. Soon after, students welcomed the team with cheers, high-fives, and a banner that was quickly broken when the team burst through it. This reminded many who are involved in the school that Dominican is truly a community of people who support each other. Mrs. Landes agreed, commenting, “Our primary goal was to get people to come to the game and fill the stands, and I was pleased with how many students, parents and faculty/staff were there.”

Lake Country Lutheran came out fighting hard, with a touchdown early in the first quarter, and another soon after. Fans, however, continued to cheer as they sipped hot chocolate and shared blankets in the stands. And, after a stand-still score of 20 to 0 with Lake Country Lutheran ahead and the first half coming to a close, Jonathan Reneau, the soon-to-be Homecoming King, had a key interception that became a highlight of the evening.

The team came back in the second half, with two touchdowns and holding the Lightening to only one touchdown. This year was the first time in two years the Knights kept the Lightening from outscoring them by over 30 points.

The fans and team were also featured on TMJ4’s Football Frenzy, which can be viewed here: http://www.jsonline.com/multimedia/video/?bcpid=13960335001&bcplid=35530467001&bctid=44362802001
