On Friday May 12th, the Dominican student body elected the 2012 Dominican student councils, with the senior class council consisting of elected president Elizabeth Mueller, Vice President Chris Vance, Secretary Taylor Brockman, and Treasurer Max Pignotti, along with sophomore Sydney Manista as the Executive President.

Elizabeth Mueller said, “I didn’t run because I was dared to or anything, it’s just something I’ve always wanted to do.” Elizabeth has never been on the student a student council before, but said, “I think I bring a new perspective and I’ll always have my classmates to support me. I want to make our senior year the best possible.” Elizabeth’s prior leadership includes Kairos and volleyball captain. She won the presidency by just one vote over Chris Vance.

Each candidate gave his or her speech in the auditorium and then every student voted for their top two choices. The universal theme for all the speeches was about making their final year at Dominican count.

Sophomore Sydney Manista was elected to be the executive president. She was chosen in a school wide—excluding seniors—election and served as class president in both her years at Dominican. Sydney said about being elected, “It’s a huge responsibility that I will take seriously. I want to positively influence the way our school runs for the next generation of students.”

Senior Jojo Wycklendt, and acting Executive President, said, “This new student council is made up of many hard working people. Every student should be excited to see what their representatives are going to do next year.”

Chris Vance was class president this year for the juniors. Next year as the vice president he said, “I hope to help in anyway I can. In my class’ senior year I want to make sure we get it right.”

Next year will be Max Pignotti’s third term as a student council member, and it will be Taylor Brockman’s second.

The Newest Superhero Flick On Top Opening Weekend

By Andrew Hobbs

Marvel’s latest superhero movie, directed by Josh Whedon, pulled in 200.3 million alone on its opening weekend in the US, while it skyrocketed to more than 600 million worldwide.

The highly anticipated movie gained widespread critical acclaim with the LA Times saying, “Director, Whedon is the key reason why this $220-million behemoth of a movie is smartly thought out and executed with verve and precision. It may be overly long at two hours, 23 minutes, but so much is going on you might not even notice.”

The new Avengers does an excellent job of spreading out the time between each character, giving them enough screen time to move all of their singular stories forward. Along with a serious story line, Whedon includes well-timed moments of humor keeping the mood from getting too serious and reminding the audience how much fun superhero movies are to watch.

The movie follows the assembled Avengers team of Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and the Hulk newly played by Mark Ruffalo.

Marvel once again had all actors reprise their roles from previous movies and put them in the same universe, adding to the continuity that millions of fans have come to expect from the ever-growing franchise.

The exception to this is Mark Ruffalo who replaces Edward Norton as Bruce Banner, and does a good job of keeping Banner a complex character. Compared to Norton, Ruffalo makes a much better scientist who can go toe to toe with Downey’s genius yet witty Tony Stark.

Junior Jacob Young said, “This movie was the best one yet. All the characters worked so well together and the movie was much funnier than I thought it was going to be. I really hope the next one is as good.”

Senior Armon Sanders said, “I really liked this movie. The screenplay was really good and I thought all the characters got plenty of screen time. I’m already looking forward to the next movie.”

“The Avengers” is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action throughout, and a mild drug reference.

Side Note: Stay for the credits for a spoiler about the sequel.

By Quinn Porter

Authorities in Gilbert, Arizona allege that 39-year-old Jason Todd Ready, a former Marine with connections to neo-Nazi and anti-immigrant groups, shot and killed four people and himself on Wednesday, May 2nd.

It was described as a violent domestic argument by a neighbor who called the police. According to Abcnews, Sergeant Bill Balafas was at the scene and said, “There was a 911 call regarding that argument. In the midst of that call, a shooting occurred. Mr. Ready shot and killed all four victims and then killed himself.”

The four victims were closely related. Ready’s girlfriend, 47-year-old Lisa Mederos, her daughter, 23-year-old Amber Mederos, and her 1-year-old granddaughter, Lilly, were all killed. Amber’s boyfriend, 24-year-old Jim Hiott, was also killed. He was a veteran who served in Afghanistan.

After searching his home, Ready reportedly has many firearms within his home, including military grade weaponry. He also has pictures on Facebook of himself posing with these firearms.

Ready formed the “U.S. Border Guard,” an armed militia of anti-immigration activists. There are theories within this group that drug cartel assassins killed Ready and his friends.

Ready’s ex-wife’s brother, Adam Lindgren, said, “I got into a few arguments with Ready but that they were never violent. Ready had a temper, but not a violent temper, that I was aware of.” Ready and his ex-wife were married for 13 years and have been divorced since 2003.

Russell Pearce, Arizona’s former immigration law sponsor, told thedailybeast, “I met JT Ready and he seemed to be a decent person. He was a pro-life Christian that volunteered at the Church.”

Ready was running for the position of sheriff before his death. His campaign focused against the dangers of illegal immigration and drug cartels. The Republican Party denied him of running as a republican due to his extreme views.

By Elizabeth Mueller

Travel around the world by dining at The Coquette Café, a cozy eatery which features a specialized menu from a new country each month. This always changing menu has helped the café gain some local attention.

This month, Coquette is traveling to Puerto Rico with their Puerto Rican menu highlighting the Island’s staples. The menu includes Sofrito Shrimp with Tostones and Cassava Root, Mojo Isleno with Pan Seared Red Snapper in a caper, tomato, and garlic sauce, with Arroz con Grandules, and finishes with a Puerto Rican Rum Cake with Guava Cremé Anglasie all for $32 dollars. “Every month, we have a new specialized menu from a new place around the world. We have never done Puerto Rico before and so, for this month only, our chefs decided to try out the island cuisine.” said waitress Kelly Greene. Greene continued saying “Our international menu is a real hit. It receives a lot of attention and is special because it includes an appetizer, entree, and dessert.”

While the specialized menu is often pricey the café offers great prices for sandwiches and soups ranging anywhere from $6.95 to $9.75. The menu’s most popular items include the Rôti de Boeuf sandwich which costs only $9.75. Regular Steven Miller said “I like Coquette’s menu because it does french cooking well, and yet offers lots of variety”. DHS student Jacob Young said “I went to the Coquette Café once with my family and I really enjoyed it. The atmosphere was kind of quiet and calm.” Young continued saying “Their menu is always changing which is kind of different.”

For the ultimate foodies, The Coquette Café also offers weekly cooking classes which include wine and food tasting. The classes are held on Tuesday nights from 6:30 to 8:30 and costs $59.00 per class. Examples of classes are learning to cook Gluten Free, Tahiti, or Spanish Cuisine. The classes were voted Best Cooking Class in the magazine Milwaukee’s Best.
On May 4, 2012, Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch died at age 47 after a 3 year bout with cancer.

Yauch was an American rapper best known for being a founding member of the Beastie Boys, a rap group who formed in New York City in 1979. Yauch directed many of the Beastie Boys’ music videos as well as other independent films.

Yauch announced in 2009 that he had a tumor in his salivary gland located in which he received surgery on that same year. As a result of Yauch’s battle with cancer the band had to cancel its tour and postpone album debuts. Yauch was also unavailable to attend the Beastie Boys induction to the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame last month because of his battle with cancer.

“He was a talented musician who inspired many” said sophomore, Jason Brown. “I remember playing his songs when I was in middle school and how cool I thought they were. It is sad that he had to pass at such a young age”.

Brown was correct about Yauch being an inspiration too many as popular British band, Coldplay, performed a tribute to MCA at the Hollywood Bowl. The band did they’re own rendition of (You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party)—an original Beastie Boys song. Check out the tribute here http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=LVr4UP9ntLs

“The music he helped make will live on” said sophomore, Tim Jurgens. “No Sleep Till Brooklyn was always one of my favorite songs to play on Guitar Hero. MCA left behind a legacy of music that won’t be forgotten”.

Junior Adam O’Neill agreed with Jurgens. O’Neill commented by saying “I have their first album (License to Ill) and even though they released before I was even born I still enjoyed their music greatly. That just goes to show you that he will be remembered”.

On Tuesday May 1, 2012 Newt Gingrich will officially suspend his year-long presidential campaign after his five-state shutout in this week’s primaries.

When asked about Newt’s bow out, Dominican High School junior, Henry Moroder said “Gingrich was way behind in the presidential race and would be facing an uphill battle”.

Moroder was correct in his statement as Gingrich hoped to make some headway in the April 24 primaries. However, Mitt Romney swept all five primaries. Connecticut, Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island all decided upon Romney.

Gingrich was anticipating a win in Delaware, but even if he had won all of this week’s primaries he’d still be far behind Romney. Click here for the 2012 republican primary tracker. [http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/special/politics/primary-tracker/]

With Gingrich out, the republican candidacy is between Mitt Romney and Ron Paul with Romney in a tremendous lead over Paul. 1,144 delegates are needed to win the GOP presidential nomination there are 2,286 delegates still up for grabs so it still is possible for Paul to catch up, however, Dominican students seem to think otherwise.

“The likelihood of Paul catching up is very slim” said Junior Jacob Young. “He is far too behind to make a comeback”. Sophomore Tyler Hetchler agreed by saying “Paul is like 100+ delegates behind Romney. He won’t be able to catch up”.

Both Young and Hetchler are correct in saying Paul has a long way to go. Romney has roughly 767 more delegates than Paul does. It has been rumored that with Gingrich’s bow out that he will endorse Romney but is not for certain. The specifics on Gingrich’s reasons for dropping out and political endorsement will most likely be revealed when he gives his official speech in the Washington D.C. area, where he has lived since leaving office.

Texas Prom Queen Arrested

In Horizon City, Texas teen Angie Gomez was arrested last week based on a theft by deception charge. The 19 teen year old had shared with Horizon High School that doctors had given her a six month period to live.

Gomez had explained to her community that as a child she had suffered from leukemia and now the cancer had returned in a fatal state. Together with family and friends Angie Gomez created the Achieve the Dream foundation in order to support families of children with cancer.

Due to her alleged condition, Gomez missed her senior prom and so another local high school held a special prom just for her where she was declared prom queen. That same month Gomez’s fraud was discovered.

After receiving a complaint that Angie Gomez was not ill, the city’s police opened an investigation on June 2, 2011. Her six month death sentence had passed and Gomez seemed to be fine.

Horizon City police arrested Angie Gomez at her place of work with a warrant. Gomez was jailed with a 50,000 bond and faces a felony charge.

According to detectives the Achieve the Dream foundation bank account had more than 17,000 dollars worth of donations. Gomez’s mother said that she had no idea of the extent of her daughter’s fundraising. Her lawyers Sheldon Myers said, “She has a real soft spot for people that suffer from those types of diseases, and that’s why she was trying to get money for them.”

DHS Prom Committee member junior Jarred Bedgood said, “ I hope nothing like this ever happens at Dominican, no matter what intentions she had with the money it is still wrong.

Another member of the committee junior Mykiliah Thompson said, “Prom is about having the time of your life and creating memories with others, all she did was have a prom full of lies and full of herself and that is wrong to me.”

On Saturday April 21, 2012 Dominican High School students and parents experienced something they have never experienced before; Dominican’s first annual Man Pageant. Two male students from each grade level participated in the pageant at DHS and the proceeds of the event go to the charity of the winner’s choice.

Participants in the pageant include Freshmen Jerry Vartanian and Kevin Brauer, sophomores Ryan Cahala, Jack Jelacic, Jerome Linn and Jason Brown, juniors Adam O’Neill and Jacob Scobey-Polacheck, and seniors Sam Starke and Yucheng (Joe) Peng. “It was so much fun participating in the DHS Gentlemen’s Pageant. The competition was really tough. I feel honored to have been named the runner up.” said sophomore contestant Jerome Linn.

The man pageant was created and produced by DHS’s student council members and hosted by seniors Maddie Franke and Ann Spella. In order to keep the competition fair, the student council selected judges of all different varieties. The judges included English teacher Mr. Russell and DHS alum Zachary Breyfogle. Adding a female perspective was Sister Peggy and the surprise judge was the beloved former DHS staff member, Allison Belongea. “The boys participating in the pageant did a fantastic job. The competition was very tough.” said judge, Mr. Russell. Russell continued saying “What was amazing was that there were no obvious winners in the competition. The audience was completely taken by surprise by the winners.”

Coming in third place was junior Jarred Bedgood. Second place went to sophomore Jerome Linn, and the winner of DHS’s first annual Man Pageant was senior Sam Starke. “Winning the pageant was just incredible. Absolutely amazing.” said Starke. When asked how he feels now, almost a week after the competition, Starke said “I feel great. When I came to school at the beginning of the week, I kept being congratulated by classmates and teachers.”

Student Council announced that proceeds raised at the Man Pageant were totaled to over $1000.When asked where Starke will be donating the proceeds, Starke said “I will be donating the proceeds of the pageant to a Leukemia foundation. It is a disease that is close to me and I think every person’s life has been touched in some way by cancer.”
